About

Osmar ICancino

Mobile Engineering Lead with nearly 10 years designing mobile systems, building teams, and making the technical decisions that shape products at scale.

My path

I started as a mobile developer in 2016. Within my first year I was already technically leading projects for national and transnational companies — B2C and B2B applications deployed across 80+ retail locations, with native cross-platform development. That’s when I realized what truly drives me isn’t just writing code, but designing the solutions that enable an entire team to deliver better.

Over time I took on greater responsibility: I led the architecture of applications serving 9 countries, designed distribution and security systems at scale, and built internal SDKs that standardized how multiple teams integrated critical capabilities like payments, multi-factor authentication, and notifications.

Throughout my career I’ve held roles as Software Engineer, Technical Lead, Mobile Team Lead, interim Staff Engineer, and interim Engineering Manager — sometimes simultaneously. That combination gave me a rare perspective: I deeply understand the code and, at the same time, know how to align technical decisions with business direction.

What I do today

I currently serve as Mobile Engineering Lead. I lead the design, architecture, and development of scalable mobile applications as a core part of a Mobile First strategy.

I founded the organization’s Mobile Chapter — a cross-cutting space where mobile engineers share standards, solve architecture problems, and grow professionally. I design technical training programs for other engineers and mentor developers on their path toward higher-impact roles.

I work closely with product, design, and QA teams, ensuring mobile initiatives align with business goals. My focus is on multiplying the team’s impact, not just shipping features.

Currently exploring how MCPs and generative AI are transforming the way engineering teams automate and scale their work.

Beyond the code

I live in Chiapas, Mexico — surrounded by the best coffee in the world, landscapes I never tire of exploring, and the people I love most.

I’m someone who needs to move: walking aimlessly through new streets, running early in the morning, and above all training boxing. Boxing taught me something that engineering also demands: discipline, reading the moment, and the ability to stay calm when everything is moving fast. It’s my way of resetting, releasing everything the mind accumulates, and coming back with a clear head.

Cooking is another space where I happily lose myself — I love discovering flavors, experimenting with recipes, and finding new places to eat. Lately I’ve been exploring baking, which turns out to be much more similar to engineering than I expected: precision, patience, and don’t skip the steps. I’m also learning to brew coffee in different ways — living in Chiapas, it would be a waste not to.

I read a lot, and widely. Philosophy, poetry, and literature help me think in ways that engineering alone can’t reach. I’m also fascinated by mathematics, astronomy, and physics — that curiosity for understanding how things work never left.

I love animals, especially cats. I have 3 beautiful cats who are a fundamental part of my daily life, and you’ll probably see them mentioned more than once around here.

Here I write about what I learn along the way: architecture decisions, systems design, horizontal leadership, and reflections on what it means to grow as an engineer without leaving the technical side behind.
